Waratah to Magnet Mine Cycling
Distance: 16 km | Duration: 1 to 2 hours | Start: Junction of Waratah and Magnet roads | End: Magnet Mine
This unique rainforest trail follows an early 20th-century tramway that was built to connect Waratah with the Magnet Mine. It’s suitable for hybrid or mountain bikes but can get incredibly muddy after heavy rainfall. Aside from the main trail, there are several detours to explore, including the Whyte Hill Lookout and Philosopher’s Falls, which is named after the man who discovered tin at nearby Mount Bischoff.
The trail descends just over 200 metres in altitude, with a gradual downhill ride over the first 10 kilometres. Around the 8 kilometre mark, there is a creek crossing to negotiate, which only adds to the fun of the experience. On arrival at the historic Magnet Mine, there are plenty of scattered relics to explore before a challenging ascend to the highway leading back to Waratah.
