Port Arthur
Famed for its UNESCO World Heritage-listed convict site, Port Arthur lies on the ruggedly beautiful Tasman Peninsula. It was established by the British Empire in the 19th century and named after the lieutenant governor of Van Diemen’s Land, George Arthur. Once synonymous with hardship and loss, Port Arthur is now an open-air museum and serves as a base for exploring the spectacular surrounding coastline.
Begin your visit at the Port Arthur Gallery where you’ll find interactive exhibitions that bring the site’s history to life. Walking tours depart from here to explore the buildings and ruins that dot Port Arthur, including the shell of the inmate-built Convict Church. Discover what it was like to be confined in one of the solitary cells of the Separate Prison before strolling through the penal settlement’s heritage gardens.
Entrance to the historic site includes a cruise around Carnarvon Bay, which offers magnificent views of the Penitentiary and the Isle of the Dead. After visiting Port Arthur, you can stretch your legs along the walking trail that leads to Crescent Bay or head to the Coal Mines Historic Site. The brave should stay until after dark for Port Arthur’s legendary ghost tour to hear about the unexplained occurrences that have taken place here.
