Somerset
Located where the Cam River flows into Bass Strait, Somerset is a coastal township that has been enveloped by Burnie’s urban sprawl. It was originally known as Somerset River Cam (sharing its name with the English county), although this was shortened to just Somerset in 1963.
A sandy beach stretches the entire length of the town and provides the perfect setting for summertime swims and winter strolls. It’s fringed by protective sand dunes and an old railway line that extends along the foreshore.
In the heart of Somerset, you’ll find a small supermarket, a bakery and a milk bar, as well as the historic Sacred Heart Catholic Church. You can pay your respects to the local diggers at ANZAC Park or cast a fishing line to lure brown trout from the Cam River Reserve. Scenic drives hug the coastline that stretches west from Somerset while inland you’ll find some of Tasmania’s most picturesque countryside.
Somerset can also be used as a base for sightseeing in Burnie, a creative hub that’s clustered with galleries, workshops and studios. Admire the Art Deco buildings that line many of the city’s streets or take advantage of the diverse dining options that include laid-back cafes and gourmet seafood restaurants.
