Strahan
Serving as a gateway to Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park, Strahan is a picture-perfect harbour village on the island’s west coast. It overlooks the shores of Macquarie Harbour and is the base for cruises along the mighty Gordon River, as well as visits to the notorious penal settlement of Sarah Island.
Stroll along Strahan’s waterfront to admire its historic cottages, many of which have been transformed into B&Bs, boutiques and cafes. A stone’s throw across Long Bay is Regatta Point where steam trains come and go along the West Coast Wilderness Railway, which connects to the historic mining community of Queenstown.
A short drive from the village centre will take you to wild beaches and immense sand dunes that have been carved by the Roaring 40s. Follow the trail that leads through the beautifully sculpted Henty Dunes to Tasmania’s longest stretch of sand, Ocean Beach.
A highlight of visiting Strahan is cruising the Gordon River, taking in magnificent old-growth forests and historic logging settlements within Tasmania’s World Heritage-listed Southwest Wilderness. Near its mouth is Sarah Island, which was reportedly the harshest penal settlement in the Australian colonies. To learn more about the island’s dark past, attend Australia’s longest-running play, “The Ship That Never Was”, which details an attempted convict escape to Chile aboard the hijacked “Frederick” brig.
