Tasman Peninsula
Located just over an hour’s drive from Hobart, the Tasman Peninsula is home to blissful beaches, dramatic blowholes and the UNESCO-listed convict site of Port Arthur. It’s connected to the Forestier Peninsula by the narrow isthmus of Eaglehawk Neck while being surrounded by picture-perfect bays and the vast Tasman Sea. Originally home to the Pydairrerme people, the peninsula was selected as the site of a British penal settlement in the 1830s due to its geographical isolation.
Aside from delving into Australia’s convict past at Port Arthur and the Coal Mines historic sites, the Tasman Peninsula is renowned for its natural beauty. Its fascinating coastal formations include the Devil’s Kitchen, the Blow Hole and the Remarkable Cave, as well as the photogenic sunrise spot known as the Tessellated Pavement.
Scenic drives will take you through the charming town of Koonya and to aptly named Roaring Beach while the spectacular Three Capes Track hugs the coastline of Cape Pillar. This four-day walk ends on the white sands of Fortescue Bay, a stunning spot for kayaking, fishing and swimming. Eco-cruises offer sightings of Australian fur seals, dolphins and whales around the tip of the peninsula, which is also home to the legendary big-wave surf break of Shipstern’s Bluff.
