Devonport to Don Cycling
Distance: 11 km | Duration: 1 to 2 hours | Start: Devonport City Centre | End: Don Reserve
This scenic trail winds along Bass Strait and the outskirts of Devonport before following the banks of the Don River to the native bushland of Don Reserve. For much of the route, you’ll be sharing your ride with the heritage Don River Railway, which runs on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. With its well-sealed bitumen and concrete surface, the cycleway is suitable for all types of bikes, as well as scooters and walkers.
Interpretive signs dotting the route offer an insight into the port and railway’s past and there are plenty of attractions to discover along the way. You can stop in at the Don River Railway Museum to admire its impressive collection of vintage locomotives or get up close to Aboriginal rock carvings at “Tiagarra”, which perches atop a bluff overlooking Bass Strait.
Once back in Devonport, why not extend your ride by crossing the Mersey River aboard the little Spirit of Devonport passenger ferry, with bikes carried at no extra charge. From the opposite bank, you can continue riding along the East Devonport foreshore path to Pardoe Beach, which lies just a stone’s throw from the runway of Devonport Airport.
