Bruny Island

Separated from the Tasmanian mainland by the narrow D’Entrecasteaux Channel, Bruny Island has long been a favourite shack destination for locals. It’s home to towering cliffs, coastal heathland and spectacular beaches, as well as providing a haven for native wildlife and plants. Bruny can be accessed by a car ferry from the small fishing community of Kettering or explored on half-day cruises around the island.

Named after the French explorer, Bruni d’Entrecasteaux, the island is divided into two landmasses - North Bruny and South Bruny - which are connected by the sandy isthmus of “The Neck”. Climb the stairs that lead to its lookout for Bruny’s most popular photo op! The isthmus is an important habitat for native wildlife, most notably the fairy penguins that can be seen waddling to shore at dusk.

At the southern tip of the island is South Bruny National Park, which is home to middens created by the indigenous Nuenonne people. Soak up the sweeping coastal views from the 1836-built Cape Bruny Lighthouse or discover the ruins of a historic whaling station on the Grass Point Walk.

One of Bruny’s most challenging hikes takes you along the dolerite sea cliffs of the Fluted Cape, which rises above Adventure Bay. Surfers can tackle the reliable breaks at Cloudy Bay while foodies can get their fix at the Bruny Island Cheese Company or the Get Shucked oyster bar.
